Welcome to Castile and León

Castile and León is a big, beautiful area in the northwest part of Spain. It is one of the largest parts of Spain, with lots of open spaces, hills, and rivers. The wide Douro River flows through it, and mountains surround many places.

A Special Place

Though no city is the official capital, Valladolid is the largest city and the main one. People have lived here for thousands of years! In the Atapuerca Mountains, scientists found very old bones from early humans. These bones help us learn about our ancestors.

Many Important Spots

Castile and León has eleven World Heritage Sites chosen by UNESCO. That ties it with Lombardia in Italy for the most such special places! One famous meeting happened here in 1188. Leaders gathered in the basilica of San Isidoro of León for an early form of parliament. This helped spread ideas about fairness and rules around the world.

Nine Provinces

Castile and León is made up of nine provinces. These are:

Each province has its own main city. Valladolid is the biggest city with over 300,000 people. Many places are small towns or villages.

Fun and Learning

The area is great for learning! It has many universities, like the University of Burgos, University of León, and University of Valladolid. Students can study there and discover new things.
