Castle Clinton

Castle Clinton is a special round building made of sandstone. It is located in Battery Park at the very southern tip of Manhattan in New York City. People have used this building for many different purposes over the years.

First, it was built between 1808 and 1811 as a fort to help protect New York Harbor. Even though it looked strong, it was never used in a real battle. Later, the fort was rented by the city and became a fun place called Castle Garden. People came here to watch shows, enjoy a beer garden, and even see new inventions like the telegraph.

From 1855 to 1890, Castle Garden had a new job. It became the first place in the United States where people arriving from other countries were welcomed. Officials would check on everyone and give them advice about where to go next. Many millions of people passed through Castle Garden, making it an important part of American history.

In 1896, the building became home to the first New York Aquarium. Visitors could see many fish and sea creatures in tanks filled with river and city water. The aquarium was very popular until 1941.

Later, Castle Clinton was saved from being torn down and became a national monument in 1946. Today, it is cared for by the National Park Service. People visit Castle Clinton to learn about its history, and it also serves as a place to buy tickets for ferries to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. It remains a busy and exciting spot for visitors.
