The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes
The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes are a group of Native American people who now live in western Oklahoma. They have their main office in a town called Concho, Oklahoma. These tribes have a rich culture and history that is very important today.
The Cheyenne originally lived near the Great Lakes in what is now Minnesota. They spoke a language from the Algonquian language family. Later, they moved to the plains to hunt buffalo. The Arapaho came from places like Saskatchewan, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and South Dakota. Both tribes became good hunters and friends.
Today, the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes work together to help their community. They run several businesses, including casinos, which bring money to improve their lives. The tribe also has a newspaper called The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal Tribune that shares stories about their traditions, like powwow dancing and buffalo care.
Many famous people come from these tribes, such as Suzan Shown Harjo, an activist and writer, and Harvey Pratt, an artist and peace chief. Their stories help us learn about and respect the rich heritage of the Cheyenne and Arapaho people.
