Who Was Christiaan Barnard?

Christiaan Barnard was a famous cardiac surgeon from South Africa. He did something very important for people with heart problems.

The First Heart Transplant

On December 3, 1967, Dr. Barnard did the world’s first human-to-human heart transplant. He took a healthy heart from a person named Denise Darvall and gave it to another person, Louis Washkansky. After the surgery, Mr. Washkansky could talk easily with his wife.

Early Life and Career

Barnard was born on November 8, 1922, in Beaufort West, which is in the Cape Province. He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town. Early in his work, he helped save ten babies in Cape Town who had problems with their intestines. He also learned about new machines in the United States that helped with heart operations.

Helping Others

Later in life, Barnard stopped doing surgeries because his hands were not healthy anymore. He started the Christiaan Barnard Foundation to help children in need around the world. He passed away in 2001 in Cyprus after having breathing difficulties.
