Who Was Christian Goldbach?

Christian Goldbach was a clever man who loved numbers. He was born in 1690 in Königsberg, a city in the Duchy of Prussia. He studied math and also learned about laws. Goldbach traveled around Europe and met many smart people who loved numbers, too.

Moving to Russia

In 1725, Goldbach moved to Russia and started working at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He became a teacher there and helped lead the school. He worked with a famous mathematician named Leonhard Euler. Goldbach shared many fun ideas about numbers with Euler, and these ideas helped Euler do important work in number theory.

Fun Ideas About Numbers

Goldbach is best remembered for something called Goldbach's conjecture. It is a fun puzzle about adding numbers together. Even today, mathematicians still think about his ideas. Goldbach also wrote letters to other smart people, sharing his thoughts and questions about numbers. His work helped others learn more about math.
