Who Was Claude Debussy?
Claude Debussy was a famous French composer. He was born on August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a town near Paris. Even as a small boy, he loved music and played the piano. At just ten years old, he went to the Conservatoire de Paris, the best music school in France.
His Beautiful Music
Debussy became well-known when he was 40 years old for his opera called Pelléas et Mélisande. He wrote many lovely pieces for orchestras, like Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Nocturnes, and La mer. He also wrote beautiful piano music, such as sets of 24 Préludes and 12 Études. His music felt magical, like looking at a soft, dreamy painting.
Why Do We Remember Him?
Debussy's music was special because it was different from most music of his time. He liked to write about nature, such as the sea and the light of the sun. His music used long, calm notes and unusual chords, making it sound mysterious and wonderful. Many famous composers later, like Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók, were inspired by Debussy’s unique style.
Debussy passed away in Paris on March 25, 1918, but his music is still loved and played all around the world. People enjoy his pieces because they feel like a beautiful dream.
