Welcome to Colorado Springs!

Colorado Springs is a big, beautiful city in the state of Colorado. It is the most crowded city in El Paso County, Colorado. Lots of people live here—over 478,000 in 2020!

The city sits high up in the mountains, about 6,000 feet above sea level. That makes it one of the highest cities in the United States! Nearby is a very tall mountain called Pikes Peak, which is almost 14,200 feet high. Because of the cool weather and great views, many people love to visit or live in Colorado Springs. It is also only 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado’s biggest city.

A Little History

Long ago, the Ute, Arapaho, and Cheyenne peoples lived in the area. Later, it became part of the United States. In 1871, a company created the town of Colorado Springs. It grew fast, with many people from England moving there. People called it “Little London.” It became an official town in 1886.

Fun Things to Do

Colorado Springs is full of exciting places to explore! One famous spot is Garden of the Gods, a park with tall, colorful rocks perfect for hiking and climbing. You can also visit the United States Air Force Academy or the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Love sports? The city is known as Olympic City USA because it has the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. Over 50 sports organizations have their offices here!

The city also has many parks and trails. Palmer Park is a big park where you can play, picnic, and enjoy beautiful views. There are also special paths for walking and biking.
