What is a Compass?
A compass is a special tool that helps people find their way. It has a little needle that always points to a place called magnetic north. This helps us know which way is north, south, east, and west. Compasses are very useful for travelers, hikers, and anyone who needs to find directions.
A Long History
Compasses were first made a long time ago in China during the Han dynasty. People there used a special stone called lodestone that could pull iron. Over time, compasses were used in many places like Western Europe and the Islamic world. They became important for sailors and explorers.
How Compasses Work
Most compasses have a tiny magnet that acts like a needle. It floats in liquid so it can move easily and always points north. Some compasses glow in the dark so you can see them at night. They also have tools to help measure angles on maps.
Compasses can sometimes get confused by metal or electronic devices nearby, so itβs best to use them away from cars, trucks, and other metal objects.
Different Types of Compasses
There are many kinds of compasses! A thumb compass is small and easy to hold, perfect for reading maps. Some special compasses, like those used by soldiers, have sights to help aim. Today, many mobile phones have tiny electronic compasses that can find direction too!
