Copepod

Microscopic copepods are tiny aquatic animals that play an important role in water ecosystems by serving as food for larger creatures.

Copepod

Copepods are very tiny animals that live in water. You can find them in freshwater like lakes and rivers, and in saltwater like the oceans. They are so small that you need a microscope to see them clearly!

These little creatures are part of a group called crustaceans, which also includes crabs and shrimp. Some copepods float freely in the water, while others live on the bottom near the mud. They come in many different shapes and sizes, but most are only about as long as a grain of rice.

Copepods are very important for scientists. By studying these tiny animals, we can learn how healthy a lake, river, or ocean is. They are like little helpers that show us if the water is clean and full of life.

Some copepods like to live on other animals, such as fish or corals. Others live in special places like swamps, wet forests, or even inside plants that collect water, like bromeliads and pitcher plants. No matter where they live, copepods are everywhere in the water world!

Copepods are interesting because they can glow in the dark! This helps protect them from animals that might want to eat them. They also help keep the water clean by eating tiny plants and small bits of material.

Because they are so tiny, copepods do not need hearts or blood to move things around. Most of them do not even need special parts to breathe; they simply take oxygen from the water around them.

Copepods are also very important for young fish. Many small fish, like the mandarin dragonet, eat copepods when they are little. This helps the fish grow big and strong.

In some places, people use copepods to help stop mosquitoes. When copepods are added to water where mosquitoes lay eggs, they eat the mosquito babies. This helps keep diseases like dengue fever away. This natural method is used in places like Vietnam and is being tested in other countries too.
