What is a Dental Pad?

A dental pad is a special hard area in the mouths of some animals, like cows, sheep, and camels. These animals do not have front teeth on the top of their mouths, so the dental pad helps them grab and eat grass and other plants.

How Does it Work?

When these animals eat, their tongue moves to pick up food. The food is held between the dental pad and the lower front teeth. This helps them eat bits of grass, but it means they can't bite the grass very close to the ground. Because of this, they usually eat grass that is about 6 inches or more from the ground.

Why is it Important?

The dental pad is very important for how these animals eat and survive. It lets them chew plants and get the nutrition they need to stay healthy. Without this special pad, they would have a hard time finding enough food.
