Diabetes
Adapted from Wikipedia · Explorer experience
Diabetes is a condition where the body has trouble managing sugar in the blood. This happens because the pancreas doesn’t make enough of a special helper called insulin, or because the body’s cells don’t use the insulin well. When this happens, sugar can build up in the blood.
People with diabetes might feel very thirsty, need to go to the bathroom a lot, or feel extra hungry. They might also lose weight without trying to, or notice their vision is a bit blurry.
There are a few types of diabetes. The most common is type 2, which usually starts when people are older, but can happen at any age. Type 1 diabetes is less common and often starts when people are children or young adults. It happens when the body’s immune system doesn’t make enough insulin. Another type, called gestational diabetes, can happen during pregnancy but usually goes away after the baby is born.
Keeping diabetes healthy means eating good foods, moving around a lot, and sometimes using special medicines. Learning about diabetes and working with doctors helps people stay healthy and strong.
Diabetes has been known for a very long time. Ancient people noticed that some had too much urine, and later, doctors named it “diabetes.” In the early 1900s, doctors discovered insulin, which changed how diabetes is treated and helped many people live better lives.
