What is a Draper?

A draper was a special job where people sold cloth, like the fabric used to make clothes. Long ago, everyone needed to buy cloth to make their own shirts, dresses, and other garments. Drapers helped people choose the right materials in busy markets and towns.

History of Drapers

During a time called the medieval period, drapers were very important. They had special shops where they sold cloth. Even famous writers like Jonathan Swift wrote funny stories pretending to be a draper.

Famous People Who Were Drapers

Many well-known people started their lives working as drapers. For example, Margaret Bondfield began working in a draper's shop when she was just 14 years old. Harry S. Truman, who later became the President of the United States, was a haberdasher before he entered politics. These people show how important this job was in history.

Drapers Today

Today, the word "draper" is used in the fashion industry. In a fashion design studio, a draper helps make clothes by placing fabric on a special form. This makes it easier to see how the clothes will look when they are finished.
