The Duchy of Croatia

The Duchy of Croatia was an old country that started in the 7th century. It was made by the White Croats who moved to a place called Dalmatia, which was once ruled by the Romans.

This country had many important towns like Klis, Solin, Knin, and Nin. It covered the coast and mountains of what we now call Croatia, but not the area called Istria.

Sometimes, the Duchy was ruled by big empires like the Byzantine Empire and the Carolingian Empire. Other times, it was its own free country. In 879, a duke named Branimir was called the ruler of an independent Croatia by the Pope.

The Duchy of Croatia was near the beautiful Adriatic Sea. It reached from the coast into areas like western Herzegovina and Bosnia. Some big coastal towns like Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik were ruled by the Byzantines.

The Croats built churches and monasteries. They made special jewelry and swords. They lived in many places, not just one capital city. Their dukes lived in towns like Klis, Solin, Knin, and Nin.

The Duchy of Croatia was an important part of history. It grew and changed until it became a kingdom under its first king, Tomislav.
