Welcome to Dunedin
Dunedin is a lovely city in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the second-biggest city there, after Christchurch. People often call it the "Edinburgh of the South" because it is named after Edinburgh, a city in Scotland.
Dunedin is home to about 132,800 friendly people. The city sits near the beautiful Otago Harbour, a place where the sea meets the land. Around Dunedin are green hills and the remains of an old volcano. Long ago, from around 1250 to 1300 AD, people called Māori lived in this area. Later, in the 1840s, people from Scotland came and started the city. It grew quickly when gold was found nearby in the 1860s.
A City of Learning
Today, Dunedin is very special because of its schools. It is home to the University of Otago, which is New Zealand's oldest university, and the Otago Polytechnic. These schools make Dunedin a place full of curious minds and fun learning. Students and teachers bring energy and joy to the city.
Fun Places to Explore
Dunedin has many interesting places to visit. You can see old, grand buildings and learn about the city's history. The Dunedin Railway Station is a beautiful old train station that looks like a castle. Larnach Castle is another fun spot that looks like a real castle from stories.
You can also visit the Botanic Garden to see lovely flowers and plants. The Dunedin Chinese Garden is a peaceful place with water and beautiful designs. And if you love animals, the Orokonui Ecosanctuary lets you see birds and other wildlife in a safe home.
Dunedin is a city where history, nature, and learning come together. It is a wonderful place to explore and discover new things!
