East Germany

East Germany, also called the German Democratic Republic, was a country in Central Europe. It existed from 1949 until 1990. After a big and sad event called World War II, Germany was split into different parts. One part was controlled by the Soviet Union and became East Germany.

East Germany bordered the Baltic Sea, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. It was very close to West Berlin, which was a special area inside East Germany but belonged to West Germany.

Life in East Germany was different from life in West Germany. The government made many decisions, and people had certain rules to follow. Many people wanted to visit or move to West Germany, which had a different way of life.

In 1961, the government built the Berlin Wall to stop people from leaving East Germany. The wall was a big symbol of the split between the two Germanies.

By 1989, many people in East Germany wanted change. Peaceful protests helped bring new ideas. The Berlin Wall fell later that year, and in 1990, East Germany joined with West Germany. This ended East Germany as a separate country.

East Germany had its own special traditions, music, and sports. Even though it no longer exists, many people remember it fondly, especially for its unique culture and memories. Today, Germany works to bring all parts of the country together.
