What Is Elevation?

Elevation tells us how high or low a place is compared to the average level of the oceans. We usually think about elevation when we look at mountains or valleys on Earth. It helps us understand the shape of our planet.

Why Elevation Matters

People use elevation in many ways. For example, maps show elevation so we can see how high a mountain is or how deep a valley goes. Pilots also need to know the elevation of landing areas to keep airplanes safe.

Fun Facts About Elevation

Some mountains are special because they are very high above sea level. Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth when we measure its elevation. Elevation helps scientists study our world and makes maps very interesting!
