The European Commission
The European Commission is a special group that helps run the European Union. It has 27 members, called Commissioners, one from each country in the European Union. These Commissioners work together to help all the countries work better together.
There are about 32,000 people who work for the European Commission. They are split into groups called Directorates-General. Each group has its own leader and works on different jobs, like making plans or writing new rules.
The leader of the European Commission is called the Commission president. The current president is Ursula von der Leyen. She was chosen by leaders from each country in the European Union and approved by the group that helps make laws for the European Union.
The European Commission started many years ago to help bring European countries together. It has changed and grown over time to meet the needs of its member countries.
The main office of the European Commission is in Brussels, in a big building called the Berlaymont. The president’s office and meetings happen on the 13th floor. The Commission also works in many other places in Europe.
