Exeter College, Oxford
Exeter College is one of the oldest parts of the University of Oxford in England. It was started in 1314 by two brothers from Devon, Bishop Walter Stapledon and Sir Richard Stapledon. The college has been on Turl Street since 1315.
Many famous people have studied at Exeter College. Writers like William Morris and J. R. R. Tolkien, the author of the popular The Lord of the Rings, went to school there. Actor Richard Burton and runner Roger Bannister, who was the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, also studied there. Author Philip Pullman is another well-known graduate.
Exeter College has a friendly community. Students enjoy special events like the yearly Burns Night dinner, which celebrates the Scottish poet Robert Burns. The college has a mixed-voice choir that sings three times each week. Students also enjoy many sports, including boating, football, and rugby.
Exeter College has beautiful old buildings. The chapel, built between 1854 and 1860, looks like a famous building in Paris. The college’s garden has great views of important university buildings. Students can live in rooms on Turl Street or in special homes on Iffley Road.
