Fight Songs

A fight song is an exciting tune linked to a sports team. It is most common in the United States and Canada. In places like Australia, Mexico, and New Zealand, these songs are called the team anthem, team song, or games song.

At first, fight songs were linked to college sports. Now, they are also used in schools and professional sports.

Fight songs are meant to be sung together, helping fans cheer for their team. They are often played many times during a game. For example, a band might play the fight song when the team enters the stadium, every time a point is scored, or during breaks while cheerleaders perform. In Australian rules football, the winning team usually sings their song at the end of the game.

Many fight songs have been around for a long time, linking fans to old traditions, often with music played by the school's band. Words like "fight," "win," and "victory" are common in these songs. Lyrics might also mention the team's colors, spell out the school's name, or use words like "hail" and "rah."

Hundreds of colleges have fight songs, most starting in the early 1900s with football games. The first college fight song in the United States was "For Boston" by T. J. Hurley in 1885 for Boston College. One of the oldest in Australia is "Play Together, Dark Blue Twenty" from Melbourne Grammar School, dating back to before 1893.

Unlike stadium anthems, fight songs are made just for one team, and they are not the same as a slower-paced school song called an alma mater.
