What is a Gas Giant?

A gas giant is a huge planet made mostly of hydrogen and helium. These big planets look very different from Earth because they do not have a solid surface like ours. Instead, they are covered in thick clouds and layers of gas.

In our Solar System, the two gas giants are Jupiter and Saturn. They are the biggest planets and have beautiful rings and many moons.

Fun Facts About Gas Giants

Deep inside Jupiter and Saturn, there is a special kind of hydrogen called “metallic hydrogen”. It can act like electricity! Scientists think these planets also have a tiny, hot, rocky center, but it is so squeezed that we do not know much about it yet.

Gas giants can also be found far away from our Solar System. Some of these planets are called “cold gas giants” and are about the size of Jupiter. Others, called “gas dwarfs”, are smaller but still have thick layers of gas.

Weather on Gas Giants

The weather on gas giants can be very exciting! Big storms, like Jupiter’s famous Great Red Spot, are huge swirling clouds that move very fast. These storms can even create lightning, just like thunderstorms on Earth.

Deep inside Jupiter and Saturn, helium can turn into liquid and fall like rain. This helps give these planets extra heat that we can see from far away.
