George Washington
George Washington was the first president of the United States. He is often called the Father of His Country for helping to bring about American independence. People remember him as a great leader who helped shape the new nation.
George was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His family lived in a place called Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River. He did not have a lot of schooling, but he learned important skills like surveying land and drawing maps. Later, he traveled to Barbados and survived smallpox.
When George grew up, he married Martha Dandridge Custis. They lived at Mount Vernon, where George grew crops like tobacco and wheat. He was also elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses and spoke out against unfair taxes from Britain.
In 1789, George Washington became the first president of the United States. He worked hard to set good examples for the new government. He started important departments and chose leaders for them. He believed in staying out of foreign wars and talked about the importance of unity. After his time as president, he returned to Mount Vernon, where he worked on his farm and built a distillery to make whiskey.
Today, many places are named after George Washington, like the city of Washington, D.C. and the state of Washington. There is also a tall Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. His face appears on money, like the one-dollar bill, and on many stamps. People all over the country remember him as a hero and a great leader.
