What Is Graffiti?

Graffiti is a fun way people make drawings or write words on walls, bridges, or other big surfaces. Sometimes it looks like simple names, and other times it is very colorful and detailed. Many people see graffiti in cities and towns around the world.

A Long History

Graffiti is very old! People have been making marks on walls for thousands of years. In places like ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire, people wrote messages or drew pictures on walls. Even today, we can see some of these old markings.

In the 1970s, graffiti became very popular in places like the New York City subway system and Philadelphia. Artists started to use bright colors and cool styles to make their names stand out. Now, graffiti can be found in many countries, showing different cultures and ideas.

Why People Love Graffiti

Some people think graffiti is a problem because it is done without permission. Others love it because it makes streets more colorful and fun. Graffiti can tell stories, show feelings, or even share important messages. Famous artists like Banksy use graffiti to make people think about big ideas.

Graffiti can also be a way for artists to share their work with everyone. It is a free way to show creativity and make the world brighter, one wall at a time.
