Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay is a big, beautiful bay in Southeast Brazil, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is the second largest bay in Brazil and covers a lot of space! Many cities, like Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias, Niterói, and São Gonçalo, are close to its shores.
The bay is very long and wide, but its entrance is very narrow. It is only 1.5 kilometres wide between two famous spots: Pico do Papagaio (Parrot's Peak) and Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf). The name "Guanabara" comes from the Tupi language, meaning something like "bay similar to the sea."
Many islands are in the bay, such as Ilha do Governador, Ilha de Paquetá, and Ilha das Cobras. The Rio-Niterói Bridge crosses the bay, connecting two sides. Boats and ships travel here often, and important places like Galeão - Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport are near the bay.
Guanabara Bay used to have lots of fish and marine life, but it has faced some problems from the nearby city. People are working hard to help the bay get better and healthier again. Even today, sometimes you can see Bryde's whales near the bay's entrance!
