Haitian Carnival

Haitian Carnival, called Kanaval in Haitian Creole, is a happy celebration that happens for many weeks each year in Haiti. It ends on Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday. The biggest parade is called Kye Marn and happens in Port-au-Prince, the capital city. People love this time because of the colorful parades, fun music, and lots of dancing.

The carnival starts in January with a smaller event called Pre-Kanaval. Then, the main fun begins in February and goes until Mardi Gras. During the carnival, people wear beautiful masks and costumes. There are also food stands where you can try tasty treats. Music is very important, with bands playing lively songs like zouk and rap kreyòl.

Besides the big carnival in Port-au-Prince, smaller towns like Jacmel and Aux Cayes also have their own celebrations. One special event is called Rara, which happens during Lent. It features parades with drums and other instruments, making it a colorful and musical time.

Haiti’s carnivals are a wonderful way for families and friends to come together and have fun. Many tourists visit each year to enjoy the joyful atmosphere and exciting performances.
