What is Heavy Water?

Heavy water is a special kind of water. It looks just like regular water, but it has a secret inside! In regular water, tiny parts called hydrogen atoms are very light. In heavy water, these hydrogen atoms are a little heavier. This makes heavy water act a bit differently.

Heavy water is also called deuterium oxide. It is not dangerous, and our bodies have tiny bits of it naturally. But if there is too much heavy water, it can make living things feel unwell.

How Do We Make Heavy Water?

One of the most common ways to make heavy water is called the Girdler sulfide process. This is a special method that scientists use. Heavy water is used in many important places, like places where they study tiny particles, called nuclear magnetic resonance, and in special kinds of machines that help us learn about tiny bits of matter, called infrared spectroscopy.

Fun Facts About Heavy Water

Heavy water looks and feels a little different from regular water. It is a bit heavier and melts at a higher temperature. If you put a piece of heavy water ice into regular water, it will sink to the bottom! Heavy water also does not have the same blue color as regular water because its tiny parts move in a different way.
