Portrait of scientists Albert Einstein and Hendrik Antoon Lorentz taken in 1921 in Leiden.

Hendrik Antoon Lorentz was a smart scientist from the Netherlands. He was born on July 18, 1853, in Arnhem. His teacher, Frederik Kaiser, inspired him to study science. He went to Leiden University and learned about math and physics.

Lorentz became a teacher at Leiden University. He loved studying electricity, magnetism, and light. His ideas helped us understand how these things work together. He discovered something called the Zeeman effect, which shows how light changes near magnets. For this work, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics together with Pieter Zeeman in 1902.

Lorentz also helped make big ideas in science easier for others to understand. Many famous scientists, like Albert Einstein, respected his work. Even today, his discoveries are important for scientists all over the world. He passed away on February 4, 1928, but his work still helps us learn about the world.
