Houston Cougars
The Houston Cougars are the sports teams for the University of Houston. People also call them the Coogs or just Houston. The name "Cougars" was suggested by a teacher and old football coach named John R. Bender.
The teams play in a big group called the Big 12 Conference. Their school colors are scarlet red and albino white. Their mascot is a cougar named Shasta.
Houston has a long history in sports. One famous moment was the Phi Slama Jama, and the men's golf team has won sixteen national championships. The university has many places for sports, like TDECU Stadium, Fertitta Center, and Schroeder Park.

Basketball: The men's basketball team is very famous. They have had great players like Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. They play at the Fertitta Center.
Football: The football team started in 1946. They now play in TDECU Stadium. In 2015, they had a great season and won a big game.
Golf: The men's golf team is one of the best in history. They have won many championships and have players who now play on the PGA Tour, like Fred Couples.

The Houston Cougars have a special rivalry with nearby Rice University. They play for a trophy called the "Bayou Bucket."
Many of the sports places are along Cullen Boulevard on the university campus. Some teams play at places not on campus, like the Golf Club of Houston.
