The Israel Defense Forces

The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, is the army that helps keep Israel safe. It has three main parts: the Israeli Ground Forces, the Israeli Air Force, and the Israeli Navy.

The IDF was started on May 26, 1948, right after Israel became a country. It began with small groups that wanted to protect their communities. Since then, the IDF has grown to protect Israel and its people.

People in Israel often help the IDF in different ways. Most people over 18 spend about two years serving. After this, they might be called to help for short times, especially if there is a big event. The IDF also has special programs for students, people from other countries, and many others.

The IDF works with many countries around the world. It has strong ties with the United States, Germany, and India, among others. These friendships help both countries share ideas and tools to stay safe.

Israel remembers its heroes each year on Yom Hazikaron, a special day to honor those who have served. There are many museums and places to learn about Israel’s military history, such as the Yad La-Shiryon in Latrun and the Israel Defense Forces History Museum in Tel Aviv. These places help everyone learn about the brave people who have worked to protect Israel.
