The Jugurthine War

A long time ago, there was a kingdom called Numidia in North Africa. Today, this area is mostly Algeria. The king of Numidia was Jugurtha. He was a smart and strong leader.

Numidia was a good friend of Rome. When Jugurtha became king, some people in Rome were worried. They thought he might not stay a friend. This made Rome and Numidia have a difficult time together.

Rome sent leaders to talk with Jugurtha. But sometimes, things did not go well. Jugurtha was very clever. He knew many ways to stay safe. Finally, Rome decided they needed to solve the problem.

A Roman general named Quintus Metellus came to help. He was brave and fair. Metellus tried many times to talk with Jugurtha, but Jugurtha was hard to catch. Metellus followed Jugurtha into the big Sahara desert.

Later, another Roman leader named Gaius Marius came to help too. Marius was also very smart. He talked with a nearby king, Bocchus I of Mauretania. With Bocchus’s help, Jugurtha was finally caught.

Jugurtha was taken to Rome. People there saw him and learned about the faraway lands of Africa. The story of Jugurtha and his war with Rome is remembered because it shows how important it is to be honest and fair.
