Knossos
Knossos is an ancient place in Crete, Greece. It is very old and important because people lived there a long, long time ago. It was part of the Minoan civilisation, one of the earliest advanced cultures in Europe.
The most famous building at Knossos is the Palace of Minos. It was not just a home for a king. It was a busy place where people worked, traded things, and celebrated special events. The palace was first built around 1900 BC and was made bigger after some damage around 1700 BC.
Knossos is famous in old stories from Greece. These stories tell about a king named Minos, his wife Pasiphaë, and their daughter Ariadne. There are also tales about a hero named Theseus and a clever inventor called Daedalus. People thought the palace looked like a maze, called the Labyrinth, where a creature named the Minotaur lived.
Today, visitors can walk through what is left of this amazing old place and learn about the people who lived there thousands of years ago. In 2025, Knossos was named a special place by UNESCO, along with other important Minoan palace centres like Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos, and Kydonia.
Knossos has a very long history. People first lived there around 7000 BC. They farmed, raised animals, and made tools and crafts. Over many years, the place grew and became very important. The palace helped manage resources, store goods, and hold special events. Even after the palace was damaged, people kept living there and it stayed important for a long time.
