What is a Lūʻau?

A lūʻau is a happy party or feast from Hawaiʻi. It is a special time for friends and family to come together and enjoy good food and fun activities. Lūʻau are often held for celebrations like birthdays, weddings, or graduations.

Food and Fun

At a lūʻau, you can find tasty foods like poi, which is made from taro, and kālua puaʻa, a special roast pig cooked in an earth oven[/w/17]. Other foods might include poke (a salad made from fish), lomi salmon, and haupia, a sweet coconut dessert. People often eat with their hands and sit on mats decorated with ti leaves.

Music and Dance

Lūʻau are also full of music and dance. You might hear beautiful songs and see hula[/w/9] dancers moving gracefully. Sometimes there is live music with ukulele and guitar. Guests can even make their own lei[/w/30], which are colorful necklaces made from flowers, leaves, or shells, to wear and enjoy the celebration.

Lūʻau are a wonderful way to experience the friendly and joyful spirit of Hawaiʻi.
