What is the Chattian?

The Chattian is a special time in Earth's long history. It is part of a big list that scientists use to talk about when things happened long, long ago. This time came after another time called the Rupelian and before a time called the Aquitanian.

When Did the Chattian Happen?

The Chattian happened between about 27.3 million years ago and 23.04 million years ago. That was during a time called the Oligocene Epoch, which was a little before the time we call the Miocene.

Why Do We Know About the Chattian?

Scientists study the Chattian to learn about old rocks and tiny sea creatures called foram. These tiny creatures change over time, and that helps scientists mark the start and end of the Chattian. The Chattian name comes from an old German tribe.

During the Chattian, there was a very big eruption a long time ago, but it is just one of many interesting things that happened on our planet.
