Les Misérables

Les Misérables is a very famous book written by Victor Hugo. It was first published in 1862 and is one of the greatest books from the 1800s. Many films, television shows, and a popular musical are based on this story.

The story takes place in France, starting in 1815 and ending in Paris in 1832. The book follows a man named Jean Valjean. He was in trouble with the law but later tried to change his life and do good things.

Victor Hugo used real events to help him write his book. He saw a person taken away for stealing bread to feed their family. This inspired parts of the story. Hugo also visited places like prisons to make his book more realistic.

Les Misérables shows big ideas like law, mercy, history, politics, and love. It also lets readers see the history of France, the city of Paris, and important questions about life and doing what is right.

The book has many characters, including Jean Valjean, a man who tries to be better; Javert, a police officer; and Cosette, a kind girl Valjean helps and cares for. The story begins with hard times but ends with hope.
