The Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha is the House of the People. It is the lower house of the Parliament of India. People from all over India come together here to make important decisions for the country.
Members of the Lok Sabha are chosen by adults who vote in elections. The person with the most votes in each area wins a seat. There are up to 543 elected members. They meet in a special chamber in New Delhi, the capital of India. These members serve for five years.
The Lok Sabha helps create laws and decide on many issues that affect India. Their meetings are shown live on Sansad TV so people can watch. The latest group of members, called the 18th Lok Sabha, was elected in May 2024.
A Short History
For a long time, Britain ruled a large part of India. During this time, British leaders made decisions for India. Later, more Indians were allowed to help make decisions. India became independent in 1947. The Lok Sabha began its work on 17 April 1952 after the first big elections.
How It Works
The Lok Sabha has special powers. It can introduce and pass motions that can cause the government to step down. It is also the only house that can start and pass money bills, like the budget. This helps make sure that the people's representatives have a strong say in how India is run.
Members of the Lok Sabha meet three times a year: in February to May, July to September, and November to mid-December. The first hour of every meeting is called Question Hour. Members can ask ministers questions about government actions and policies. Ministers must stand and answer these questions.
