What is the London Stock Exchange?

The London Stock Exchange is a special place where people can buy and sell tiny pieces of companies called shares. It is based in Paternoster Square in the City of London, England. It started a long time ago, in 1801, and is one of the oldest places like this in the world.

Helping Companies Grow

The London Stock Exchange helps companies get money. They sell shares to people who want to help them grow. This way, companies can buy new machines, build bigger factories, or start new projects. People who buy shares hope the company will do well so they can sell their shares later for more money.

Why It Matters

The London Stock Exchange is very important for many companies, especially those that work with Natural Resources like mining. It has a special list of the 100 biggest companies in the United Kingdom, called the FTSE 100 Index. This list helps people see how well these big companies are doing.

The exchange has a long history, starting from old coffee houses in the 1600s. Even though it faced many changes over the years, it always kept working. Today, it is a key part of the world's money and business world.
