Lumber

Lumber is wood that has been cut and shaped into useful sizes, like beams and planks. It is used for building houses, making floors, wall panels, and window frames. People also use lumber for furniture and many other things.

Lumber comes from both softwoods and hardwoods. Softwoods, like pine and fir, are often used for building. Hardwoods, like oak and maple, are used for furniture and cabinets. The size of lumber can vary a lot. Common sizes include 2ร—4 and 2ร—6, which are very popular for building.

People have been using lumber for a very long time. In the past, they used wind-powered sawmills to cut wood much faster than by hand. Today, lumber is made in many ways, and there are special tools to cut and shape it.

Lumber can sometimes have natural marks or cracks, but these do not always make the wood unusable. When wood is treated with special chemicals, it can last much longer, especially in wet places.

Using wood for building is good for the environment because trees can grow again. Wood helps reduce harmful gases compared to materials like concrete and steel. When wood is no longer needed, it can be recycled into other products, like wood chips for energy, which helps keep our planet clean.
