Lynkestis

Lynkestis was a small, old kingdom long ago in Upper Macedonia. It sat in the mountains, just east of the beautiful Prespa Lakes. The people who lived there were called Lynkestai.

Many years ago, Lynkestis had its own kings. They said these kings came from a special family in ancient Corinth called the Bacchiadae. Even when big kings like Philip II of Macedon took control, the people of Lynkestis kept their own traditions.

The land of Lynkestis was wild and windy, with cold winters and hot summers. People moved their sheep and goats to find fresh grass. Later, a very important city called Heraclea Lyncestis was built there.

The people of Lynkestis spoke a kind of Greek language called Northwest Greek. They prayed to many gods, just like other Greeks. One of their big temples was for Zeus, the ruler of the gods.
