Keeping Safe from Malaria

Malaria is a sickness that can make people very tired and weak. It is caused by tiny creatures called Plasmodium. These tiny creatures spread when special mosquitoes called Anopheles bite a person.

To stay safe from malaria, people can do a few simple things. They can try to avoid mosquito bites by wearing clothes that cover their skin, using bug spray, and sleeping under special nets. These nets help keep mosquitoes away while people sleep.

People who travel to places where malaria is common can also take special medicines. These medicines help protect them before, during, and after their trip. Doctors and health groups like the World Health Organization give advice on which medicines to use.

Scientists are working hard to make a malaria vaccine. This is a special shot that can help protect people from getting very sick with malaria. In some places, doctors give special medicines to babies and pregnant women to keep them safe from malaria, too.
