What is Manga?
Manga are special kinds of comics or graphic novels that come from Japan. They have a unique style that started a long time ago, in the late 1800s, and are part of Japanese art. The word “manga” means both comics and cartooning in Japan, but everywhere else, it usually means comics first published in Japan.
People of all ages in Japan love reading manga. You can find stories about many things, like comedy, science fiction, fantasy, sports, and more. Many manga are translated into other languages so people all over the world can enjoy them, too.
Since the 1950s, manga have become a big part of Japan’s publishing world. Today, they are very popular, and many people around the globe read them. Big companies like Shueisha, Kadokawa, and Shogakukan are some of the top manga publishers.
Usually, manga stories are printed in black-and-white to save time and money, but some are full-color. Stories often begin in big manga magazines and later get put together into books called “tankōbon.” If a manga becomes very popular, it might even be made into an animated show or movie!
