Maria Anna Mozart
Maria Anna Mozart, also called Marianne or Nannerl, was born on July 30, 1751, in Salzburg. She was the older sister of the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like her brother, Nannerl loved music and played the keyboard very well. Her father, Leopold Mozart, taught her when she was very young, and she became an excellent player.
When she was a child, Nannerl traveled with her parents and brother across Europe. They visited places like Munich and Vienna. People celebrated her as a child prodigy. Later, she stopped traveling but kept playing music at home and teaching piano.
Nannerl married Johann Baptist Franz von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg and moved to St. Gilgen. After her husband passed away, she returned to Salzburg and began teaching and performing music again. She is believed to have written music, though none of her works are left today.
In her later years, Nannerl helped share stories about her famous brother, Wolfgang. She passed away on October 29, 1829, but her memories of Wolfgang remain important for people who learn about him today.
