The Metric System

The metric system is a special way to measure things. It helps everyone use the same sizes and numbers. This makes life easier for everyone, like when you buy toys or do science experiments.

The metric system uses simple units. A metre measures how long something is, like a big step. A kilogram measures weight, about how heavy a small bottle of water is. We use seconds to count time, like how long a song lasts. There are units for electric current, temperature, and even light!

Most countries in the world use the metric system. It is very important in science because it helps scientists share their discoveries clearly. The metric system is based on nature, making it very accurate.

In the metric system, we add special words to unit names to make numbers bigger or smaller. For example, “kilo” means 1,000, so a kilometre is 1,000 metres. “Milli” means one-thousandth, so a milligram is one-thousandth of a gram. This helps us understand very big or very small numbers easily.

The metric system started in France in the 1790s. People wanted a way to measure things that was the same everywhere. They used the Earth’s size to help create the first units. Today, the metric system is called the International System of Units (SI) and is used by scientists all around the world.
