Microalgae are tiny plants that float in water. They are so small that you need a microscope to see them. They live in freshwater and marine places, like lakes, rivers, and oceans.

These little plants are very important. They make much of the oxygen we breathe using photosynthesis. They also help keep our planet clean by using greenhouse gas carbon dioxide to grow.

Microalgae are the base of the food web. They give food and energy to many small sea animals, which then feed larger animals, even fish that we eat. Some of the omega-3 fats in fish come from the tiny algae that fish eat.

People use microalgae in many useful ways. They help make plant food better for growing crops. They are also used in beauty products that keep skin healthy. Scientists study microalgae to learn how to grow them better and use them for many good things, like making medicines and cleaning water.
