Moai: The Giant Stone Faces of Easter Island
The Moai are huge stone statues made by the Rapa Nui people on Rapa Nui, also called Easter Island. These amazing statues were carved between 1250 and 1500. They are famous for their very large heads, which take up most of the statue. Many of them do not have legs!
These big stone faces were made to honor important ancestors. The Rapa Nui people believed the Moai were the living faces of their leaders. Most of the statues were made at a place called Rano Raraku, which was the main quarry. Many were moved to special stone platforms called ahu around the island’s edge.
Some of the Moai are very tall! The tallest one put up, named Paro, was almost 10 meters tall and very heavy. People are still finding new Moai today. These statues show how clever and hardworking the Rapa Nui people were.
The Moai have big heads, big noses, and long ears. Some have special round shapes on their heads called pukao, added later to show even more importance. These giant stone faces watch over the island and remind us of the amazing skills of the people who made them.
