Mount Elbrus

Mount Elbrus is the tallest mountain in Russia and Europe. It stands very high—5,642 meters (18,510 feet) above the sea! This makes it the highest mountain in both places. The mountain is a quiet volcano, meaning it does not erupt anymore.

Elbrus has two peaks, or tops. The western peak is the tallest, and the eastern peak is just a little shorter. People have climbed these peaks for many years. The eastern peak was first climbed in 1829, and the western peak in 1874. Many visitors enjoy the view and the challenge of climbing this amazing mountain.

The name Elbrus might come from a far-away mountain range called Alborz in Iran. Different cultures have their own names for the mountain. Some call it “The mountain of happiness,” while others call it “Eternal Mountain.”

Mount Elbrus is located in the Caucasus Mountains, near the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It is close to the country of Georgia. You can reach it by car from towns like Kislovodsk and Nalchik. The area around Elbrus is beautiful, with snow, ice, and glaciers that feed rivers below.
