Portrait of Nicolaus August Otto, an important inventor in automotive history.

Nicolaus Otto

Nicolaus Otto was a clever engineer from Germany. He loved science and machines. One big idea he had changed how cars and many machines work today.

Otto made a special kind of engine called the internal combustion engine. This engine mixes fuel and air, squeezes it tight, and then uses a little spark to make it go. This is how many engines work even now!

Otto was born in a small place called Holzhausen an der Haide. He did not finish school but kept learning about science. Later, he worked in shops selling things like coffee and tea before he started making engines.

In 1876, Otto made a new engine with four steps. This engine helped make the first cars possible. Because his work was so important, people still talk about him today. His idea is used in many engines all around the world.
