What is Nordic Skiing?

Nordic skiing is a fun way to slide on snow with long, skinny skis. In Nordic skiing, only the front of your boot is tied to the ski, so your heel can lift up. This is different from another kind of skiing called alpine skiing, where your foot stays tied the whole time.

People love Nordic skiing for many reasons. Two popular kinds are cross-country skiing and Telemark skiing. Cross-country skiing is like walking on snow, and Telemark skiing has special turns and jumps.

Fun in the Snow

Many athletes enjoy competing in Nordic skiing. In big events like the Olympics, they race in competitive cross-country skiing, jump really far in ski jumping, and mix both skills in Nordic combined. These games happen every odd year at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

Both cross-country skiing and ski jumping need lots of practice. Cross-country needs strong legs, and ski jumping needs to move fast through the air. Skiers work hard to get better and have fun while doing it!
