Oviedo is a lovely city in northern Spain. It is the capital of a place called the Principality of Asturias. Many people visit Oviedo to see its old and beautiful buildings.
Oviedo is close to the sea, near cities like Gijón and Avilés. Even though it is not right on the ocean, the weather stays mild and comfortable all year. The city sits between two rivers, the Nalón River and Nora River, and has some hilly areas.
Long ago, Oviedo was started by two monks in the year 761. Kings helped build many churches and palaces, making it a special place. Today, Oviedo has important buildings like the Cathedral of San Salvador and the beautiful Santa María del Naranco. It also has universities and many jobs in offices.
The city has fun traditions, like parades and festivals. One big event is the Festive Calendar with a parade of the Three Wise Men. People also enjoy eating local foods such as fabada, a bean stew, and chorizo a la sidra, sausage cooked with cider.
Oviedo is proud of its sports stars, especially Fernando Alonso, a famous racing driver. The city has teams for football, rugby, basketball, and more. Every year, Oviedo holds many sports events, bringing people together to cheer and have fun.
Oviedo makes friends with cities all around the world. Some of its twin towns are Oviedo, Florida in the United States, Valparaíso in Chile, and Bochum in Germany. These partnerships help the city stay connected to people far away.
