Palmdale, California

Palmdale is a sunny city in Los Angeles County, California. It is part of the Antelope Valley in Southern California. The San Gabriel Mountains separate it from the busy Los Angeles Basin to the south.

Palmdale became a city in 1962 and grew quickly. It is the 33rd most populous city in California. Together with its neighbor, Lancaster, the Palmdale–Lancaster area is home to many people.

A Special Place

Long ago, native people lived in Palmdale and used the valley to travel. In 1886, people from the Midwest settled here and named it Palmenthal because they saw Joshua trees that looked like palm trees. Farming grew when a big water system was built in 1913.

During World War II, an air base was built nearby, bringing many jobs. After the war, Palmdale became important for building airplanes. Today, it is known as the “aerospace capital of the United States.” Big companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman work here.

Fun Things to Do

Palmdale has many places to explore. You can visit the Dry Town Water Park in the summer. The Palmdale Amphitheater hosts concerts in the evening. The Joe Davies Heritage Airpark lets you see amazing airplanes.

The city also has a golf course, a playhouse, and an art gallery. On summer Thursday nights, “Thursday Night on the Square” offers games, crafts, and food for everyone to enjoy.

Famous People

Palmdale has been home to many well-known people. Paul George, a professional basketball player, grew up here. Afroman, a musician, wrote a song called “Palmdale” about his life in the city. Actor Niecy Nash and test pilot William (Pete) Knight, the city’s first mayor, are also from Palmdale.
