Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games are big sports events for athletes who have different kinds of disabilities. There are Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. They happen after the Olympic Games. The first Paralympic Games were in 1960 in Rome, Italy. Since then, they have grown into one of the biggest international sports events.
Athletes in the Paralympics compete in many types of sports. They have different disabilities, such as problems with muscle power, vision impairment, or intellectual impairment. The games are organized to make sure everyone can compete fairly. The International Paralympic Committee is the main group that runs the Paralympic Games. Its office is in Bonn, Germany.
The Paralympic Games have special symbols and ceremonies. The flag has three colors—red, blue, and green—in shapes called Agitos. These colors come from many nation flags. The motto of the Paralympic movement is “Spirit in Motion.” The games celebrate the skills of athletes with disabilities and inspire the world.
Some Paralympic athletes have also competed in the Olympic Games. For example, Neroli Fairhall from New Zealand was an archer with a disability who competed in the 1984 Olympics. The Paralympic Games show how people with disabilities can achieve amazing things in sports. Cities that host the Olympics also host the Paralympics, making it easier for everyone to enjoy both events.
