What is PayPal?

PayPal is a way to send and receive money online. It helps people and businesses pay for things without using paper money like checks or money orders. Many online shops and auction sites use PayPal to handle payments.

A Short History

PayPal started in 1998 as a small company called Confinity. It began by helping people pay and get paid online. In 2002, it became part of eBay, a big online marketplace. In 2015, PayPal became its own company again.

How PayPal Works

You can use PayPal to buy things on websites, sell items, or even give donations. You don’t need a PayPal account for all services, but having one lets you do more. PayPal can change money between different currencies and has a mobile app you can download.

Why People Like PayPal

PayPal makes it easy to pay online. It works in many countries and has millions of users. Over time, PayPal added new features like PayPal Credit, which works like a credit card for online shopping. It also helps businesses accept payments and lets people use special types of money called cryptocurrencies.

Safety First

PayPal has rules to help keep money safe. Buyers can ask for help if they didn’t get an item or if it’s not what they expected. Sellers get some protection too, but they need to follow certain rules.

PayPal also has ways to make accounts safer, like special codes you can get on your phone when you log in.

Fun Fact

In 2024, PayPal made debit cards that could be added to Apple Wallets. This was part of their biggest advertising campaign ever!
